The Finals were held at the Devon & Exeter Squash Club on 27th March.
I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, Dean Clayton, Matt Baker & Phil Hancock.
The main final was between Newton Abbot & Tiverton. We played 4 of the main finals on the glass back and one on the right hand court. String’s 4 &5 were first on and Newton Abbot took an early lead 2-0 in the competition.
Next on was Adam Smart (NA) v Bruce Wheatley. Adam proved too strong for Bruce and won 3-0 giving Newton Abbot the win.
The next match on was Dan Gough (NA) v Ian Jolley. The match went to 1-1 then Dan took the 3rd making it 2-1. The 4th game was close and Ian nearly made it go to a 5th game but Dan managed to take the last game 15-13 making it a 3-1 win.
The last match of the main competition went the same way as the previous one ending up a 3-1 win to Dave Brown (NA) v Sean Gunn.
Newton Abbot becoming overall winners of the Devon Shield 5-0 against Tiverton.

The Plate final was between Dartington v Sidmouth.
It should have been Kingsbridge in the final but they could not get a side together for this date. It was then offered to Sidmouth and they happily accepted.
The first two matches on were strings 5 & 4. Dartington took both of these matches 3-0 taking them to an early 2-0 lead in the final.
Next on was Jon Whiley (Dartington) v Alick Russell. Sidmouth needed this match to stay in the final. Jon went 2-0 up and it didn’t look good for Sidmouth. Somehow Alick managed to take the next two games making it 2-2. With both players tiring the last game went to Alick 15-11, giving Sidmouth the win 3-2 and keeping Sidmouth in the competition.
The next match was between Dominic Fenton (Dartington) v Chris Woodruff. Dominic took the 1st game 18-16 and then the 2nd, giving him a 2-0 start. Chris found himself another gear and took the 3rd game 15-8. The 4th was closer but Chris took it 13-15 bringing it back to 2-2. Chris managed to reach for everything in the 5th taking the last game and the win 3-2, bringing the overall scores of the competition to 2-2.
Leaving it all up to the last match of the night. Martin Billis (Dartington) v Alan Cockram. This I think was the match of the night. Martin took the 1st game 15-10, but Alan took the next 2 games 15-13 & 15-7 giving Sidmouth a 2-1 lead. Martin fought back well taking the next game 15-13 bringing it back to 2-2.
The competition was all on the last game of the last match of the night. The main competition had just finished and the main focus on this match.
The last game was close with Martin taking a 12-9 lead. Alan pulled it back somehow to 14-14. It couldn’t have been closer. Alan managed to seal the win 16-14 giving Sidmouth the win and the overall victory winning the Devon Plate in a close 3-2.

The Finals were held at the Devon & Exeter Squash Club on 20th March.
I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, Dean Clayton, David Morris & David Mudge.
The main final was between D&E and Fort Stamford which was the same two teams as last year.
It was nice to see that there was plenty of support for the teams. We managed to get all of the main cup games played on the glass back court which allowed everyone to view the matches.
D&E started off the points with Mike Gregory taking a 3-0 win over Philip Thomas. The second match was between Luke & Duncan. Luke was running for everything and managed to get everything back beating Duncan 3-0 taking D&E to a 2-0 start.
Game of the night was between Dan Mc Donald (D&E) and Jamie Shewbrook(FS). Dan started well taking the 1st game, but then Jamie took the 2nd and 3rd games going 2-1 up. Dan looked very tired and it looked all over. Somehow Dan managed to get a second wind, managing to win the fourth game bring it back to 2-2. The last game was very tight and the game went to 10-10 with both players having match balls. Eventually Jamie won 13-15 to win and to keep Fort Stamford in the match.
Next on was Matt and Craig. Craig managed to get a 3-0 win for Fort Stamford bring it back level for the overall score 2-2. Leaving it all up to the last match of the evening to get a final result.
Last on was James Snell and Tony Tremain. Unfortunately James was too strong for Tony and D&E sealed the victory winning the Devon Cup 3-2.
Bob Hefford (Chair) presenting D&E with the Devon Cup.

The Plate final was between Exeter Golf &CC and Exeter University.
The first two matches on were Martyn Newberry (EGCC) v Rich Carter & Greg Parsons (EGCC) v Will Sergeant. Both matches were very similar. Martyn and Greg both getting 1 game making their matches 1-1. Unfortunately the University players showed thier stamina and kept running for everything. The University winning both matches 3-1 going 2-0 up in the final.
The next matches on was Simon Irvin (EGCC) v Peter Joyce and Jon Sharpe (EGCC) v Seb Posner. Jon started well winning the first game but Seb came back winning the second bringing it back to 1-1. Jon needed to win to keep EGCC in the match. Unfortunately Seb won 3-1 giving Exeter University the win and the overall victory. In the other game Peter Joyce proved too strong for Simon winning 3-0.
The last match of the night was between Robin Turl v Nick Thompson. Nick winning 3-0 against Robin, sealing thier overall victory against EGCC 5-0.
Exeter University have now won the Devon Cup plate for the 4th consecutive year!
