Shield and Shied Plate Finals 5th
April 2013

The finals of the Devon Shield and Shield
Plate took place at the Devon & Exeter Squash & Racketball Club on
Friday.

In the Shield Competition ( for clubs
outside the top eight in Devon) Newton Abbot
were too strong for Exmouth with Lee
Curtis, Tom Haysom, Dave Brown and John
Sharpe winning in straight games and Nigel Bell only dropping a close first
game to Carl Sowden.

The teams in the Plate competition were
more evenly matched. Paul Clare and
captain Rob Cann won in four and five games respectively to give Sidmouth a
two-love lead. However Plymouth University’s Josh Huitson
and Dewi Banks levelled the score with straight game wins over Nigel Desousa
and Alick Russell. The deciding match
between Chris Woodruff and Ben Holding was probably the best of the evening
with Ben edging out Chris in the fifth game to give Plymouth University victory.

The finals for the Devon Cup were held on Friday 22nd March at Torquay.

I would like to thank Torquay for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, David Morris, Dean Clayton & Jonathon Doney.

There was plenty of support for both of the teams in the final which was between Torquay and Exeter Golf & CC. The glass back was the main court on the night and it was difficult to find a place to sit for every match.

The order of play was 5,4,3,1,2 and the matches were quite even. It started off and got to 1-1. Then Exeter GCC won at string 3 to take them ahead. The next Match was between Dave Palmer & Luke Bishop, Dave needed this to keep Torquay in the cup. He finally managed this winning 3-1.

The final match of the evening was string 2 Stuart Perret v Christian Turner. This turned out to be a very noisy match from the supporters of both sides cheering on their players. Having already won the Premier Division Torquay were after the double. Unfortunately it didn’t happen with Christian taking the match and the Cup going to Exeter Golf & CC.

The other final was the Plate between Crediton & Exeter University. There were a couple of close matches but Exeter University were too strong for Crediton beating them 4-1.

The finals for the Devon Cup were held on Friday 30th March at Devon & Exeter on behalf of Okehampton.

I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, Dean Clayton, David Hughes & Bruce Coleman.

The Shield final was between Okehampton & Tiverton. Four of the matches were held on the glass back and one on court 5. The match on court 5 was the only match to go to 5 games, not unusual really as it was Phil Allin he likes to get his money’s worth! The first 2 matches went to Okehampton and the 3rd went to Tiverton. The 4th match of the evening clinched the Shield for Okehampton with Arnie Searle winning 3-0 against Gerry Batten. The final match went to Tiverton giving the final score 3-2 to Okehampton.

The Shield plate final was between Exmouth & Plymouth University. Again there was only 1 match that went to 5 games. The first 2 matches went to the Uni and the 3rd to Exmouth. The match between Garry Batten & Matt Eglen went to 5 games and this was a long match that finally ended going to Matt to clinch the victory over Exmouth. The final game went also to the University giving a 4-1 victory.

The finals for the Devon Cup were held on Friday 23rd March at Devon & Exeter.

I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, David Morris, David Hughes & Bruce Coleman.

The Cup was between Devon & Exeter & Fort Stamford. There were 3 matches that went to 3-2 with D&E narrowly taking 2 of these giving them a 2-1 lead. The following match would decide the winner of the Devon Cup which was left to Christian Turner. His match against Nick Thompson led to a 3-1 victory and the Cup.

The plate final was between Exeter University & Exeter Golf & CC. Exeter GCC did not have a side in the premier this year and this showed when the only points came from the matches of Martyn Newbury and Jon Rycroft who both won 1 game each. The overall result giving Exeter University the win 5-0.

The finals for the Devon Shield were held on Friday 1st April at Devon & Exeter.

I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, Dean Clayton, David Hughes, Karen Bealey.

The Cup was between Devon & Exeter & Torquay. D&E went 2-0 up and then with Dave Palmer (Torquay) claiming a 3-2 win over Mike Gregory (D&E) it was 2-1. Then with Stuart Perret (Torquay) going 2-0 against Rob Watkins (D&E) it looks like it would all be down to the last match. Unfortunatly Rob managed to change the match around and win 3-2 giving D&E the match. James Snell then went on to win 3-1 giving D&E a 4-1 win.

In the plate final were Exeter University & Newton Abbot. Unfortunatly for the University there were a couple of players away which meant it was an easy match for Newton Abbot who won 5-0.

The finals for the Devon Shield were held on Friday 8th April at Devon & Exeter.

I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event and also the markers on the night.

The main final was between Crediton and Tiverton. Crediton played well and won the first three matches giving them the win. The final match of the night was between Neil Collins (Crediton) and Bruce Wheatley(Honiton) in which Bruce won giving Tiverton their only win of the night.

The plate was between Culm Valley and Sidmouth. I was told that on the last two matches they played Sidmouth won both! It was a very close match that went to 2 – 2 and it all hinged on the last match to be played. This was between Ian Jolley (Culm Valley) and Nigel Desousa (Sidmouth). I think this was the match of the night and went on for ages, good job I asked Mark Stimpson to mark it! This also went to 2-2 and ended as 15/13 to Ian, clinching the victory for Culm Valley.

The winners of the 2010 Devon Shield were Honiton winning 3-2 against Crediton.

The winners of the 2010 Devon Shield Plate were Plymouth University winning 4-1 against Okehampton.

The finals for the Devon Shield were held on Friday 26th March at Devon & Exeter.

I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event. Also the markers on the night David Morris, David Hughes, Chris Woodruff and Ben Gilbert.

In the main final Honiton were only able to bring down 4 players. Even though Crediton were given the match at string 5 it went to 2 all. The final match of the Cup was between Neil Collins (Crediton) and Chris Woodruff (Honiton). The score ending up 3-1 to Chris giving Honiton the win.

In the plate Plymouth University took control winning their first 2 matches. Arnie Searle (Okehampton) took the next 3-1 keeping them in the match. The University taking the 4th match making it a win to Plymouth University.

Plymouth University also won the 4th Division. This is their first year in the leagues and I would like to congratulate them on their win, lets hope their success continues and maybe they will enter another team next year.

The winners of the 2010 Devon Cup were Torquay winning 3-2 against Devon & Exeter.

The winners of the 2010 Devon Cup Plate were EGCC winning 4-1 against Exeter University.

The finals for the Devon Cup were held on Friday 19th March at Torquay Squash Club.

I would like to thank Dave Palmer for his organisation of the evening. Also to Bob & Margaret for hosting the event.

The night went very well and there was a lot of supporters, although mostly from Torquay!

The finals were held in 3 courts which was better as players were able to watch other matches. Thanks to the 3 markers, David Hughes, Dave Mickie and Dean Clayton.

The most important match of the evening was between Jason Yeo (Torquay) and Andy Street (D&E) as Torquay had already lost their first two matches. Jason took the match 3 – 1 to keep Torquay in with a chance.

Jack Barnes was next on and he won 3-1 making the match score 2 all.

Thus making the final match of the evening the decider for the Cup. Olly Morrall went on to win against Ashley Knight to claim the Cup.
