Devon Racketball Cup

Devon Cup & Shield Posted on Sat, March 05, 2016 21:38:10

Hi,
We had our first ever Devon Racketball Cup on Friday 4th March 2016.
The main tournament was between:
Devon & Exeter v Paignton.

Paignton took the first match with Andy Williamson beating Karen Bealey 3-1. D&E came back to 1-1 when Jon Tipper took his game 3-0 against Graham Rogers.
The next two matches went on at the same time. It was D&E coming on top as the results for both matches was 3-1 to D&E giving them the title of Devon Racketball Cup Winners.
The last match of the night was the tightest. Adam Lings v Richie Birkett. It started off with Adam winning 11-1. Richie had his normal slow start and took the second game. Eventually it was 2-2 and Adam narrowly took the last game 11-9 winning 3-2.

The plate event was between:
Exeter University v Torquay.

Torquay took the first match with Martin Brook winning 3-2 against Jodie Keop. Unfortunately for Exeter University Jodie’s points did not count as she didn’t play 3 matches before the final.
The no1 string match was on at the same time with Peter Joyce winning 3-0 against Nigel Wilson making it 1-1. The longest match of the night was Jack Taylor v Kane Wilson that had an eventual score of 3-2 to Jack making it 2-1 to Exeter University. Although he was late turning up Rory Spelling went on with Peter Hamlet winning 3-0 and taking the title from Torquay.
The last match was between Will Sargeant and Steve Hill with Will winning the last match 3-0.

Score Card:

It was a good evening and there was a lot of support. I would like to thank D&E for hosting the event. Thanks to the markers on the night Dean Clayton, David Mudge and everyone else that helped out.

Cheers
Alan Ford

Devon Shield 2015

Devon Cup & Shield Posted on Sun, March 29, 2015 12:22:46

The Finals were held at the Devon & Exeter Squash Club on 27th March.

I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, Dean Clayton, Matt Baker & Phil Hancock.

The main final was between Newton Abbot & Tiverton. We played 4 of the main finals on the glass back and one on the right hand court. String’s 4 &5 were first on and Newton Abbot took an early lead 2-0 in the competition.
Next on was Adam Smart (NA) v Bruce Wheatley. Adam proved too strong for Bruce and won 3-0 giving Newton Abbot the win.

The next match on was Dan Gough (NA) v Ian Jolley. The match went to 1-1 then Dan took the 3rd making it 2-1. The 4th game was close and Ian nearly made it go to a 5th game but Dan managed to take the last game 15-13 making it a 3-1 win.
The last match of the main competition went the same way as the previous one ending up a 3-1 win to Dave Brown (NA) v Sean Gunn.

Newton Abbot becoming overall winners of the Devon Shield 5-0 against Tiverton.

The Plate final was between Dartington v Sidmouth.
It should have been Kingsbridge in the final but they could not get a side together for this date. It was then offered to Sidmouth and they happily accepted.

The first two matches on were strings 5 & 4. Dartington took both of these matches 3-0 taking them to an early 2-0 lead in the final.
Next on was Jon Whiley (Dartington) v Alick Russell. Sidmouth needed this match to stay in the final. Jon went 2-0 up and it didn’t look good for Sidmouth. Somehow Alick managed to take the next two games making it 2-2. With both players tiring the last game went to Alick 15-11, giving Sidmouth the win 3-2 and keeping Sidmouth in the competition.

The next match was between Dominic Fenton (Dartington) v Chris Woodruff. Dominic took the 1st game 18-16 and then the 2nd, giving him a 2-0 start. Chris found himself another gear and took the 3rd game 15-8. The 4th was closer but Chris took it 13-15 bringing it back to 2-2. Chris managed to reach for everything in the 5th taking the last game and the win 3-2, bringing the overall scores of the competition to 2-2.

Leaving it all up to the last match of the night. Martin Billis (Dartington) v Alan Cockram. This I think was the match of the night. Martin took the 1st game 15-10, but Alan took the next 2 games 15-13 & 15-7 giving Sidmouth a 2-1 lead. Martin fought back well taking the next game 15-13 bringing it back to 2-2.

The competition was all on the last game of the last match of the night. The main competition had just finished and the main focus on this match.
The last game was close with Martin taking a 12-9 lead. Alan pulled it back somehow to 14-14. It couldn’t have been closer. Alan managed to seal the win 16-14 giving Sidmouth the win and the overall victory winning the Devon Plate in a close 3-2.

Devon Cup 2015

Devon Cup & Shield Posted on Sat, March 21, 2015 13:05:25

The Finals were held at the Devon & Exeter Squash Club on 20th March.

I would like to thank Adam for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, Dean Clayton, David Morris & David Mudge.

The main final was between D&E and Fort Stamford which was the same two teams as last year.
It was nice to see that there was plenty of support for the teams. We managed to get all of the main cup games played on the glass back court which allowed everyone to view the matches.
D&E started off the points with Mike Gregory taking a 3-0 win over Philip Thomas. The second match was between Luke & Duncan. Luke was running for everything and managed to get everything back beating Duncan 3-0 taking D&E to a 2-0 start.

Game of the night was between Dan Mc Donald (D&E) and Jamie Shewbrook(FS). Dan started well taking the 1st game, but then Jamie took the 2nd and 3rd games going 2-1 up. Dan looked very tired and it looked all over. Somehow Dan managed to get a second wind, managing to win the fourth game bring it back to 2-2. The last game was very tight and the game went to 10-10 with both players having match balls. Eventually Jamie won 13-15 to win and to keep Fort Stamford in the match.

Next on was Matt and Craig. Craig managed to get a 3-0 win for Fort Stamford bring it back level for the overall score 2-2. Leaving it all up to the last match of the evening to get a final result.
Last on was James Snell and Tony Tremain. Unfortunately James was too strong for Tony and D&E sealed the victory winning the Devon Cup 3-2.

The Plate final was between Exeter Golf &CC and Exeter University.
The first two matches on were Martyn Newberry (EGCC) v Rich Carter & Greg Parsons (EGCC) v Will Sergeant. Both matches were very similar. Martyn and Greg both getting 1 game making their matches 1-1. Unfortunately the University players showed thier stamina and kept running for everything. The University winning both matches 3-1 going 2-0 up in the final.

The next matches on was Simon Irvin (EGCC) v Peter Joyce and Jon Sharpe (EGCC) v Seb Posner. Jon started well winning the first game but Seb came back winning the second bringing it back to 1-1. Jon needed to win to keep EGCC in the match. Unfortunately Seb won 3-1 giving Exeter University the win and the overall victory. In the other game Peter Joyce proved too strong for Simon winning 3-0.

The last match of the night was between Robin Turl v Nick Thompson. Nick winning 3-0 against Robin, sealing thier overall victory against EGCC 5-0.

Exeter University have now won the Devon Cup plate for the 4th consecutive year!

Devon Shield 2014

Devon Cup & Shield Posted on Sun, March 30, 2014 00:43:53

In the Devon Shield Finals this year were Plymouth University & Exmouth. Plymouth University had the choice of venue and decided on hosting the event at Fort Stamford.
I would like to thank Royston for hosting this event and also the markers on the night, Dean Clayton, David Morris & David Hughes. Also a thank you for Jess Hefford for taking the photos.
Exmouth unfortunately were only able to field a team of 4 players. Due to this being a last minute decision I was volunteered to play to give the player a match. This was only counted as a friendly and Plymouth were awarded the walkover at string 5.
First on were strings 3 & 4. The first match went to Plymouth and a close second match went to Dave Kussel (Exmouth) winning 3-2.
To give the Plymouth University string 5 a match I went on. This went to 5 games with a narrow victory to myself.
The last two matches went to Plymouth University giving them the victory 4 matches to 1 and the Devon Shield.

Click below for the score card:

The other event was the Devon Shield Plate.
The two teams in this were Tiverton & Sidmouth. This was a very close match and three of the matches went to 5 games.
1st on was string 5 with Alistair King (Tiverton) taking the first match. Then strings 4 & 3. Mark Chattey (Tiverton) taking a 3-2 victory and Paul Clare (Sidmouth) winning his match.
This taking Tiverton to a 2-1 overall score. Last to go on were the number 1 & 2 strings. Both matches going to 5 games with the string 2 match finishing first & Ian Jolley (Tiverton) winning 3-2 giving them the victory. The remaining match was won by Alick Russel (Sidmouth) 3-2.
The overall score was Tiverton winning 3 matches to 2.

Devon Cup 2014

Devon Cup & Shield Posted on Tue, March 25, 2014 23:37:18

The Finals were held at Fort Stamford on 21st March.

I would like to thank Royston for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, David Morris & David Hughes.

This is the first time that I have been to Fort Stamford running a Devon Cup Event.
There was plenty of support on the night even without a glass backed court. Good use of step up equipment meant that plenty of people had a good view.
The order of play was 5,3,1,4,2
The match of the night was between Tony Tremain v Ben Rogers.
The overall match score being 1-1 meant that Tony needed to win to take Fort Stamford into the lead. Unfortunately Tony lost 5-11 in the 5th giving the overall match score 1-2. Duncan was on next taking a 3-0 win against Pete Whiteley bringing the match score to 2-2. If only Tony had won!
Then Mike Gregory for D&E taking the last match 3-1 to win the Devon Cup.

Click the pdf below for the score card:

The picture below of the D&E team with a stand in trophy and a picture of the original trophy. This is due to the main trophy being mislaid. It has now been found and hopefully now in the hands of D&E.

The Plate Final was between Exeter University v Newton Abbot. There was one very lengthy match and it was good to see that they had a big audience watching them. This was between Joel Bricknell & Adam Smart with Joel winning eventually 3-2.
The other matches went to Exeter University giving them an overall victory to win the Devon Plate.
Exeter University have now won this event 3 years in a row! And with 3 of the same players!
