Shield and Shied Plate Finals 5th
April 2013

The finals of the Devon Shield and Shield
Plate took place at the Devon & Exeter Squash & Racketball Club on
Friday.

In the Shield Competition ( for clubs
outside the top eight in Devon) Newton Abbot
were too strong for Exmouth with Lee
Curtis, Tom Haysom, Dave Brown and John
Sharpe winning in straight games and Nigel Bell only dropping a close first
game to Carl Sowden.

The teams in the Plate competition were
more evenly matched. Paul Clare and
captain Rob Cann won in four and five games respectively to give Sidmouth a
two-love lead. However Plymouth University’s Josh Huitson
and Dewi Banks levelled the score with straight game wins over Nigel Desousa
and Alick Russell. The deciding match
between Chris Woodruff and Ben Holding was probably the best of the evening
with Ben edging out Chris in the fifth game to give Plymouth University victory.

The finals for the Devon Cup were held on Friday 22nd March at Torquay.

I would like to thank Torquay for hosting the event and also the markers on the night, David Morris, Dean Clayton & Jonathon Doney.

There was plenty of support for both of the teams in the final which was between Torquay and Exeter Golf & CC. The glass back was the main court on the night and it was difficult to find a place to sit for every match.

The order of play was 5,4,3,1,2 and the matches were quite even. It started off and got to 1-1. Then Exeter GCC won at string 3 to take them ahead. The next Match was between Dave Palmer & Luke Bishop, Dave needed this to keep Torquay in the cup. He finally managed this winning 3-1.

The final match of the evening was string 2 Stuart Perret v Christian Turner. This turned out to be a very noisy match from the supporters of both sides cheering on their players. Having already won the Premier Division Torquay were after the double. Unfortunately it didn’t happen with Christian taking the match and the Cup going to Exeter Golf & CC.

The other final was the Plate between Crediton & Exeter University. There were a couple of close matches but Exeter University were too strong for Crediton beating them 4-1.
